Complex issues often lurk behind domestic violence charges

There is an old adage that things are always more complicated than they seem. Like so many familiar sayings, that one has an element of truth to it. Consider, for example, the often complex issues lurking behind incidents and allegations of domestic violence.

Allegations of domestic violence often include related issues such as divorce disputes, child custody, infidelity and substance abuse. In fact, research by the federal government’s National Institutes of Health shows that alcoholism is a factor in up to 60 percent of relationships involving allegations of domestic violence.

A recent news item a domestic violence arrest east of Manhattan Beach includes a back-story that supports findings made in the research.

Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his long-running role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” was recently arrested and charged with felony domestic violence in Palm Springs. He’s also facing a charge of violating a protective order; an order the Los Angeles Times says allows him to be around his girlfriend, “but not threaten, harass, injure or assault.”

It was reported that he and his girlfriend were at a hotel when they began arguing. The 46-year-old is accused of pulling her arm and hair.

Brendon has in the past talked openly about struggles with depression and alcohol. He once said that alcohol “initially quells the anxiety definitely, but then it just adds to the anger.”

A jail cell is not the proper setting for sorting out and addressing the complex issues involved in these matters. A criminal defense attorney experienced in domestic violence cases can help you defend your rights and freedom.
